It seems Zack Syder’s upcoming interplanetary expedition has found its lead star in Sofia Boutella. It was announced that The Mummy actress will play the lead role in Snyder’s upcoming science fiction epic for Netflix, Rebel Moon.
According to Deadline, the filmmaker had started the process of scouting for the film’s lead for the past several months. His decision to cast Boutella, however, was a quick one after he was impressed with her audition.
Boutella is most popularly known for her work in films such as The Mummy (2017), Atomic Blonde (2017), and The Kingsman films.
Rebel Moon will be a part of the first look deal Snyder’s production company, The Stone Quarry, had signed with the streaming giant. The deal came on the heels of the success of Snyder’s first Netflix film, The Army of the Dead.
Rebel Moon will tell the story of a peace loving colony at the galaxy’s edge, which comes under threat when a tyrant lord by the name of Regent Balisarius decides to send his vast army there. In desperate attempts to save themselves, the colony decides to send a young woman, with a curious past, on a journey to ask help from the neighbouring planets to ward off the villain.
Snyder had earlier revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that he had attempted to make a pitch for a Star Wars movie, which did not yield results. He said Rebel Moon was the product of his love for Star Wars and that he had spent years building a sci-fi universe.
Snyder will write the film along with Shay Hatten and Kurt Johnstad. The movie will be produced by The Stone Quarry and Grand Electric.
