Many Malayalam films were released this year, but only a few of them have done well at the box office. While films with big stars and a lot of hype didn't set the cash registers rolling, films with relatively small budgets were able to turn a profit. This includes films like Romancham, Pachuvum Athbutha Vilakkum, and Pranyavilasam.
Now, another small-budget movie has shown that content is king and is the only thing that brings people to theatres. Madhura Manohara Moham, which wasn't widely promoted or publicised, has reportedly made a profit at the box office. Helmed by Stephy Zaviour, a former costume designer, the film is reported to have made around Rs 10 crore worldwide.
The film revolves around Manu Mohan (played by Sharaf U Deen), who is deeply in love with Salabha (played by Aarsha Chandini Baiju). Salabha’s father is the president of a Nair community association, which Manu decides to woo Salabha. Both their families oppose the inter-cast union of Manu and Salabha.
Manu thinks that by finding a groom for Salabha’s sister, Aarsha (Rajisha Vijayan), he will be able to win her family over. The hilarious events that follow set the story of the film.
Madhura Manohara Moham released in theatres on June 16 and was lauded for its humour and storyline. Renowned director Blessy also recently praised the film, saying that it dealt with matters like caste in a satirical and simple manner.
Scripted by Mahesh Gopal and Jai Vishnu, the film, which also stars Bindu Panicker, Saiju Kurup, and Neena Kurup, was made on a budget of Rs 4 crore.
