Vijayalakshmi Vadlapati, renowned by her stage moniker Silk Smitha, was a notable Indian actress and dancer primarily active in Tamil and Telugu cinema, with contributions to Malayalam, Kannada, and Hindi films. During the 1980s and early 1990s, she emerged as one of India's foremost sex symbols, gaining acclaim as a sought-after erotic actress in South Indian cinema. Silk Smitha played a pivotal role in shaping the landscape of Malayalam softcore films in the late 1980s.
Throughout her illustrious 18-year career, she graced the screen in over 450 films, leaving an indelible mark. Smitha initially entered the industry as a supporting actress but caught attention with her compelling portrayal of "Silk" in the 1979 Tamil film, Vandichakkaram. Notably, she became an integral part of numerous successful dance numbers in Indian films during the 1980s.
