Directed by Nikkhil Advani, Freedom At Midnight is a historical web series that explores Mahatma Gandhi and India’s 1947 independence and partition. Produced by Emmay Entertainment, led by Monisha Advani and Madhu Bhojwani, in partnership with StudioNext, Freedom at Midnight featured a talented crew including Sidhant Gupta, Chirag Vohra, and Rajendra Chawla. Sidhant played the role of former Indian Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in the web show and the actor has now opened up to responding to propaganda allegations about Freedom at Midnight
As political projects are nowadays termed propaganda, Sidhant Gupta revealed that what attracted him to the show was that it did not add to the narrative as it was set in the pre-partition era. Hindustan Times quoted him as saying, “When I read the script, it felt right. It felt like this seems the truth on paper, and when I did my research, all the facts and all the reality checks of that time, everything just aligned. So, I knew that this was the right thing to do."
"I was just amazed that our writers had really captured that essence of those people who were misunderstood along the way. That felt like the greatest risk and the greatest responsibility of my life. These are the superheroes of our history, there are no bigger characters than them,” he added.
The actor also talked about playing the role of 56-year-old Nehru on screen and mentioned that he fell in love with the politician and what he stood for.
The historical web series started streaming on November 15, 2024, on SonyLIV, which is also available to watch through OTTplay Premium.
