Showtime, the latest series on Disney+ Hotstar, is finally out! Karan Johar's OTT wing, Dharmatic Entertainment, produces an epic tale of ambition and legacy in the show. We see machinations, power struggles, and a multimillion-dollar Bollywood industry. However, only four episodes of Showtime are currently streaming. Towards the end of the last episode, the makers revealed that the rest of the episodes will be out in June 2024. Yes, the wait is long—almost three months, so to speak.

Unexpected twists and turns

SPOILERS AHEAD! In the final episode, Emraan Hashmi insults Mouni Roy by asking her to get an abortion despite her pregnancy with his child. Shriya Saran's character, who is making a comeback after a long time, replaces Mouni in an action film, adding to her trauma. Rajeev Khandelwal, who plays her husband in the period drama, removes his leading lady, whom Emraan's character ropes in to play the parallel lead alongside Shriya. This leaves Mahima Makwana's character in shambles, as she is the one who is producing the period drama.

Rajeev, portraying Armaan, faces exposure for his infidelity. This leads to people calling for a ban on his film based on Tatya Tope, the historical drama. Adding too much trouble to both Raghu's (Emraan) and Mahika's (Mahima's) lives, Showtime ends on a cliffhanger, leaving wanting for more.

Battle for legacy

For the uninitiated, in Showtime, once dubbed the "Godfather of Romance," fading cinema magnate Victor Khanna (Naseeruddin Shah) is at odds with his charming but brash son Raghu Khanna (Emraan Hashmi). Victor believes that by turning into a sell-out and producing soulless films, Raghu has damaged his reputation. Unexpectedly, a sick Victor decides to leave the studio to a complete unknown in the business—a young, idealistic journalist named Mahika Nandy (Mahima Makwana)—in an attempt to preserve Viktory's legacy. Mahika and Raghu start a vicious rivalry as they fight it out for control of Viktory Studios' legacy.

The dubious bequest sparked a conflict between modern concepts and conventional methods, creative aspirations and business realism, and outsiders taking on the Bollywood establishment. Because of their intense competition for projects, stars, money, and allies, they both have to sacrifice their values and relationships in order to keep their studios afloat. Amidst all of this chaos, a surprising new player shows up with the intention of taking advantage of their feud. The show tells a compelling story of ambition, selflessness, and moral turpitude in the turbulent world of Bollywood. It displays the complexities of the field, providing a close-up view that delves below the gloss and glamour to expose the flaws and difficulties that lie beneath the surface.

Awaiting the next act

In the second part, we have to wait and watch to see what lengths Mahika and Raghu will go to in order to remain in the game, as wins and defeats mount for both of them.
