What Is Shōgun About?

Shōgun, in simpler terms, is FX’s attempt at creating their own Game of Thrones. The studio that brought us The Americans and The Bear now dives into Japanese history. The show is based on James Clavell’s 1975 bestseller of the same name. It tells the story of Lord Toranaga, an enigmatic Japanese leader struggling to bring peace amidst a council of regents who fear his growing power. At the same time, Portuguese missionaries are spreading Christianity, complicating matters further. Toranaga must also contend with the arrival of an English sailor, John Blackthorne, who warns that the Portuguese are not as trustworthy as they seem. Blackthorne’s cannons—an unfamiliar weapon in Japan—make him a key player in the struggle for power, as whoever controls him could have the key to victory.
