“Arre... Eros theatre ke saamne milte hain”, “Eros theatre ka canteen ekdam topclass”, “Guys, Lets bunk college and catch up a movie in Eros”, “I am waiting for you at Eros theatre”, “First we will see a film at Eros Theatre, then, we will go for a walk at the Gateway Of India”.... are some of the day-to-day lines that one was used to hearing since many years. One common thing about these lines was the mention of ‘Eros Theatre’. You need not be a Mumbaikar to know where Eros Theatre is. It was a landmark in itself, just like its adjacent landmark Gateway Of India. But the abovementioned dialogues/ conversations will now be a thing of the past, because the latest update about Mumbai’s iconic Eros Cinema is that it is now being torn down! You heard it right... Mumbai’s very own Eros Cinema will now be a thing of the past.

Filmmaker Apurva Asrani took to social media and shared photographs of Eros Cinema. He captioned the post stating, ‘Heartbreaking to see #ErosTheatre being torn down. This South Bombay Art Deco landmark, built in 1938, was was where I bunked college to go to. It's where I went on my first date & where my first film #Satya released in '98. Sad that Mumbai can't preserve its heritage buildings’. No sooner did he post this, than there were many who became extremely emotional after reading about the news.
Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri replied to Apurva’s tweet stating, “Each time a single screen theatre is torn down, a piece of my childhood dies. 4 of my films released here. Watched hundreds of films, specially Matinee shows of world films. But then I also understand practicality and viability….. #Nostalgia”.
For the uninitiated, the iconic Eros Cinema was one of the most preferred single screen cinemas. But, with the advent of the multiplexes which were house to multi-screen theatres, Eros Cinema decided to shut shop and closed its operations (read ‘screening’) in the year 2017. As per a report in India Today, it's being said that the iconic Eros Theatre will now give way to a plush mall.
The same report also gave a few nostalgic insights about the theatre by stating that the theatre, which was designed by architect Shorabji Bhedwar in early 1938, had a seating capacity of 1,204 people per show. It also stated that, Eros Cinema building (which is being owned by the Cambata family), was sealed in 2017 over nonpayment of dues. Post which, a case was filed by the Labour Union in this matter.
Needless to say that, after getting to know about the news of Eros Cinema building being torn down, the netizens seem to be not able to hold back their emotions. There have been many netizens who have taken to social media and expressed their heartfelt feelings over the same.
Just as when the netizens and many film makers became emotional and teary-eyed after reading the news, there was another news report in ‘Live Mint’, which stated that ‘the iconic Mumbai theatre isn’t being demolished but only being renovated’.
