It's been 11 years since Ajith's cult film Mankatha hit screens. The action entertainer, which hit screens in 2011, revolves around a gang involved in a money heist. As the gang of four thieves plan to steal the money from cricket betting, they are unaware of the fact that a fifth person is involved in it as well. Mankatha marks Ajith's 50th film as an actor. The crime thriller has an ensemble star cast which includes Arjun Sarja, Trisha Krishnan, Lakshmi Rai, Anjali, Andrea Jeremiah, Vaibhav Reddy, Premgi Amaren, Mahat Raghavendra and Ashwin Kakamanu.
Taking to his social media handle, the film's director Venkat Prabhu shared a picture with Ajith and thanked him for trusting him. He captioned the picture, "Thanks for the trust na!! #11YearsOfCultMANKATHA more unseen pics from #mankatha tomorrow!! #ak #thala thank you for the love tweeps!! (sic)." The director had earlier stated in an interview that he approached Mankatha like a fan of Ajith and included certain elements in the film that a typical Ajith fan would expect in it. Mankatha was shot in Chennai, Mumbai and Thailand.
Music for the film was by Venkat Prabhu's cousin, and the hot-shot composer Yuvan Shankar Raja. Yuvan's title track, Vilayaadu Mankatha, went on to become a rage among Ajith fans. Yuvan stated that he had taken special care to compose for the song. The album comprised the songs Vilyaadu Mankatha, Nee Naan, Vaada Bin Lada, Machi Open The Bottle, Nanbane, Balle Lakka and the film's theme music. The album went on to become a super hit, thus becoming one of Yuvan's landmark works.
The film became a blockbuster and Ajith's performance as a baddie was appreciated by the critics and the audience alike. The film went on to bag a number of awards as well. The film is considered a milestone in Ajith's and Venkat Prabhu's career.
