A few months ago, the Shilpa Shetty starrer ‘Sukhee’ was released. The film brought back Shilpa Shetty to the silver screen. Even though the film did not do wonders and magic at the box-office, Shilpa Shetty’s performance along with the rest of the star cast were extremely appreciated. For all those who missed watching the film on the silver screen, here is your golden chance to see it on OTT. The film ‘Sukhee’ has been scheduled to premiere on Netflix tomorrow (November 17, 2023).
Since ‘Sukhee’ is all about celebrating women empowerment, let's have a look at the other films which also were made around the same premise.
Sukhee

Sonal Joshi

Shilpa Shetty, Amit Sadh, Kusha Kapila, Dilnaz Irani, Pavleen Gujral, Chaitannya Choudhry

Sukhee (Shilpa Shetty) was once a carefree girl, whose wings get clipped by the union of marriage and responsibilities. Her life’s yesterday was the same as her today and will be the same tomorrow as well. In short, her life is extremely simple and predictable. Life for her changes completely after she decides to go on a school reunion, much against the wishes of her workaholic husband and school going daughter. This trip, not only gives a new meaning to her existence, but also gifts with something that she had been yearning for since many years she got married -self-confidence and self respect.
Damini
Director:
Rajkumar Santoshi
Principal Starcast:
Meenakshi Seshadri, Rishi Kapoor, Sunny Deol, (late) Amrish Puri
Plot:
An extremely simple God fearing Damini Gupta (Meenakshi Seshadri), could not have asked for anything more after her marriage with the rich Shekhar Gupta (Rishi Kapoor). Life takes an unexpected turn when Damini witnesses a horrendous crime committed by her brother-in-law. How she single-handedly fights the case against all the odds and overcoming all the ‘periodic roadblocks’ is what the film was all about. Even though many years have passed since this film’s release, it, till date, remains one of Meenakshi Seshadri’s all-time best films!
English Vinglish
Director: Gauri Shinde
Principal Starcast:
Sridevi, Adil Hussain, Mehdi Nebbou, Priya Anand, Sapna Godbole and Amitabh Bachchan (in a cameo)

No list about women empowerment is complete without the mention of the (late) Sridevi’s film English Vinglish. While on one hand, the film had been directed by Gauri Shinde, on the other hand, it starred the legendary actress of all times- Sridevi, in one of her best performances of her career spanning many years.
Shashi Godbole (played by Sridevi) is a housewife and is someone who is always underappreciated by her family, despite all her efforts. She even gets mocked for her almost-zero knowledge about English. Despite carrying all these taunts and mocks, Shashi Godbole flies to the USA. It is here, where she finds validation, respect and acknowledgement for her talents and existence. Not the one to sit idle, Shashi Godbole tries to stand on her feet by igniting the entrepreneur in her.

Kabir Khan (played by Shah Rukh Khan), gets falsely accused of throwing a game. Eventually, he takes up the challenge of becoming the national women’s hockey team coach. The first thing that he does here is to imbibe the sense of being an Indian in every single player, whom he handpicks from various states of India. Armed with an impeccable sense of when to do what, Kabir Khan becomes successful in not just taking the ‘once-impossible-to-even-dream’ national women’s hockey team to the world finals, but also to win the much-coveted and prestigious World Cup!
Mardaani
Director:
Pradeep Sarkar
Principal Starcast:
Rani Mukerji, Tahir Raj Bhasin

Rani Mukerji, who was best known for her glam and feel-good roles, raised many an eyebrow when she said yes to playing a righteous and rough-tough cop in this film. Not only Rani shone in the film with her acting prowess, but also showed the world that women are no less than men… in all the aspects! The film saw her in the role of a dynamic police officer Shivani Shivaji Roy who is out to destroy the evil acts and intentions of Karan Rastogi (Tahir Raj Bhasin). Not only Shivani Shivaji Roy becomes successful in her mission, but also landed up being a role model for many with this film.
