Shakun Batra reveals how Gehraiyaan deals with the complexities of relationships in a simple way

It is certainly a challenging task to address sensitive topics such as infidelity through a film, but director Shakun Batra has no qualms in accepting the challenge. Through his upcoming film Gehraiyaan, the filmmaker tries to explore this delicate topic and recently opened up about what audiences can expect.

In conversation with Scroll, the filmmaker talked about how he was fascinated with films that showcased the thrill in stories revolving around ordinary life, which is exactly what he chose to do with Gehraiyaan as well. The film tells the story of four ordinary urban characters, and the director says that all the thrilling aspects of the film evolved "organically" as the story progressed.

In response to people’s claims that the film "glorified" infidelity, Shakun said that the film does not take a stance for or against monogamy, but rather just follows the story of the characters. In the end, the film does not form any opinions on them and leaves it up to the audience to decide what to feel about them.

Batra also talked about his interest in bringing complex and layered characters to the screen and said he wanted to make a film that explored the complexities of romantic relationships in a simple way. He said that there weren't any recent films that did so, which spurred him to do a film like Gehraiyaan.

The upcoming film stars Deepika Padukone, Siddhant Chaturvedi, and Ananya Panday in lead roles, along with Dhairya Karwa, Naseeruddin Shah, and Rajat Kapur. Shakun has written the film’s script along with Sumit Roy and Ayesha Devitre.

Gehraiyaan will be premiered on Amazon Prime Video on February 11, 2022.
