Debutant director Thamizh's Seththumaan will now be streamed in Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi on Sony LIV. The film is partly based on novelist Perumal Murugan's work Varugari and is produced by Pa Ranjith. Sony LIV shared the information on its social media page, "Different languages, same emotion❤️Seththumaan is now available in Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi only on SonyLIV,#SeththumaanOnSonyLIV #Seththumaan @officialneelam @Beemji #Thamizh @anthoruban @Ecspremkumar @BindhumaliniN @stunner_sam @pro_guna (sic)."
The plot revolves around basket weaver and seller Poochiyappa, a Dalit, who dreams of social mobility for his grandson Kumaresan, who parents are killed in a caste riot, which involves beef. Poochi leaves no stone unturned to ensure that his grandson receives education as he sees it as the only way to break out of the grip of caste system and constantly urges him to study hard and get into a position of power so that he doesn't have to bend in front of anyone.
In the meantime, Poochi's landlord, belonging to a dominant caste, instructs him to find a seththumaan (a chosen pig) as he craves to eat pork. Pig meat is denigrated by those occupying the higher positions in the caste ladder in the village as it eats shit and hence is considered 'unclean'. Pork and beef are essential parts of Dalit cuisine.
The film digs deep into the food and caste politics and their connection with each other. Seththumaan won the top Grand Jury Prize at The Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles (IFFLA) in 2021. The film was also screened at a number of international film festivals where it was lauded by the audience and the jury. The film opened to positive reviews when it released on May 27 on Sony LIV. Now, that the film is going to streamed in other languages, the film is expected to go places.
