In 1994, 34-year-old Senna crashed into the concrete retaining wall of the San Marino Grand Prix circuit early on in the race. Such was the impact of the crash that Senna’s temporal artery had ruptured, draining him nearly of all blood in the 2 minutes it took for officials and medical staff to get him out of his car. Although he was pronounced dead later at the hospital, the official record states that he died in the impact.

Fans waiting for the series to drop on Netflix can also check out the documentary Senna that’s available on the streamer, which profiles the late Brazilian racer and includes stock footage of some of his public appearances and interviews. The show’s a great addition to the streamer’s F1 library, which also includes a Michael Schumacher documentary and 6 seasons of Drive to Survive.
