Jeo Baby's Kaathal-The Core has received praise from Scoop director Hansal Mehta, who called it a ‘tender and loving ode to love.’ He praised Mammootty and Jyotika's roles in this movie on Twitter as well.

“@mammukka is truly having a moment in his vast filmography. What a beautiful performance from one of our absolute best. #Jyothika plays a difficult part with such honesty and empathy she moves you. Must see her more often,” he wrote. Mehta also mentioned that there is so much to learn from the film’s director Jeo Baby.

In the comments section, he praised Salu K Thomas, Kaathal-The Core's cinematographer, for which the latter expressed his appreciation.

This highly anticipated film, which released in theatres on November 23, is available on Amazon Prime. Mammootty portrays Mathew Devassy, a retired bank manager and independent panchayat candidate, in this family drama. Jyotika returns to Malayalam cinema after 16 years, portraying Mathew's wife Omana.

The protagonist of the movie is Mathew, a cynical homosexual who, in defiance of social conventions, marries Omana and spends twenty years raising their family together. This perfect picture of his family disintegrates when she files for divorce, pointing to his sexual orientation as reason. The movie appears to be primarily concerned with how people react to this.

Reception in theatres and digital space

Both the subject matter it addressed and the performances, particularly those of Mammooty and Jyotika, earned the movie a great deal of praise. However, after this plot's theatrical release, opinions among netizens were divided. Though many applauded Mammootty for his audacity in taking on such a role and his choice of scripts in recent years, the moral police raised alarms at even the mention of homosexuality.

Actor Anoop Menon compared Kaathal-The Core to legendary Malayalam directors like KG George, Padmarajan, MT Vasudevan Nair and Bharathan, in a social media post recently. “The love story of Mathew and Omana transcends the physical,” he wrote. Similarly, several actors and directors praised the movie on social media.
