BLACKPINK's rapper Jennie, who is officially credited as Jennie Ruby Jane in the drama series 'The Idol' has been the talk of the town, despite her having very little screen time on the show. The series, which received criticism for its excessive sensationalism, misogynistic depictions, and male-oriented sexual fantasies, saw the K-pop idol facing the most brunt than that of 'The Weekend' and Lily-Rose Depp.

Talking about her involvement in the show, several industry insiders claim that Jennie directly chose to take up HBO's "The Idol" role on June 7 after being approached by her friend The Weeknd, who is a producer of the drama.

While it was widely believed that YG Entertainment was to blame for Jennie's involvement in the drama, those with direct knowledge of the situation made it clear that Jennie's decision to take part was completely motivated by her own free will.

An official from TenAsia stated, "Jennie personally met with The Weeknd and received an offer to appear in the drama. We are aware that she expressed her desire to take on this project."

With the show already aired, the rapper has been receiving mixed reactions. She portrays Diane, a backup dancer for Jocelyn, the main character who aspires to become a pop star.

The episode that is out only showcased the South Korean pop star in a provocative dance routine and had a few minutes of screen time. With not much acting involved yet, it made it difficult for fans to provide a comprehensive evaluation.

While some believe that she is the only saving grace to the show, many also criticise her and the entire unit for even making such a series.

Earlier this month, 'The Idol' was invited to the non-competitive section of the 76th Cannes Film Festival. It garnered significant attention as Jennie's debut acting venture. Set in the music industry of Los Angeles (LA), 'The Idol talks about the world of idols and the love story of a popular female pop singer.

Alongside The Weeknd, Lily-Rose Depp and Jennie, Troye Sivan and Dan Levy also make an appearance.

During an interview at the Cannes Film Festival, Jennie expressed, "I have admired Sam Levinson's work for a long time, and I've always been intrigued by stories centred around the music industry." She added, "I saw this as an opportunity to be authentic and courageous. I didn't undergo any specific training or preparation. Sam simply wanted me to be myself. This experience is completely new to me—it feels like breaking down barriers."
