A Nivin Pauly comedy is always eagerly awaited by the fans of the actor, who has pulled off such roles in Thattathin Marayathu, Oru Vadakkan Selfie and Love Action Drama. However, his latest venture Saturday Night, which was helmed by Rosshan Andrrews, couldn’t meet the expectations.
The movie, which revolves around friendships, had Nivin starring along with Saiju Kurup, Siju Wilson, Aju Varghese and Saniya Iyappan. Set in Karnataka and Dubai, the film, made on a big budget, didn’t work with the audience when it hit theatres in November.
Nivin, in an earlier interview, seems to have been aware of the risks that comedies pose, especially at the box office. Though the actor said that the experience of doing Saturday Nights with his friends and too on a big canvas was fun, he explained in an earlier interview, “I love doing entertainers. That said, it’s never easy because it can go wrong real fast. It’s a thin line. The movies should make people laugh and entertain them, and it’s always tricky.”
One aspect that stood out was the over-the-top comedy in the movie, which many felt seemed forced, especially when it came from actors of their calibre. Nivin, however, had justified this, saying that the tagline of the movie itself was Kirukkanum Koottukaaram (Madman and his friends) and that his character Stanley is “a bit abnormal”. “So, the movie wouldn’t work if we follow the same meter of performance as the usual entertainer,” he said. The movie is all set to begin streaming on January 27 on Disney+ Hotstar, which also premiered his over-the-top comedy Kanakam Kaamini Kalaham in 2021.
