Karthi's much-awaited spy thriller Sardar finally hit screens yesterday (October 21) to packed theatres. The film, directed by PS Mithran, opened to positive reviews at the box office and after the word of mouth, it seems like moviegoers are flocking theatres to catch the Diwali release. The buzz is that the evening and night shows for the film were sold out yesterday and that the film minted around Rs 7 crore on the opening day. Meanwhile, Sardar has taken the best opening in Singapore and Malaysia as well. The FDFS of the film began at 8am in the morning.

The film has Karthi playing a dual role after a long hiatus. While one character is that of a spy called Agent Sardar, the other one is that of a police officer called Vijay Prakash, who is a social media sensation and loves publicity. While Karthi treads both roles with ease, his performance in the film has won him accolades. The spy thriller is a typical commercial potboiler, where there is no dearth of action. This is the first time that PS Mithran and Karthi are coming together for a film.
Bollywood star Chunky Panday, who makes his debut in the spy thriller, plays a ruthless businessman called Rathore.

Karthi thanked the audience on his social media handle and wrote, "Makkale THANK YOU for all the love and making #Sardar a super hit. Our entire team is touched by your overwhelming appreciation and response (sic)."

On the other hand, Laila makes her comeback in the industry after a long hiatus as an activist. Raashi Khanna and Rajisha Vijayan play the leading ladies, while the supporting cast includes Munishkanth, Master Rithvik, Yugi Sethu, Ilavarasu, Yog Japee and Mohammad Ali Baig to name a few. Music for the film is by GV Prakash Kumar. While cinematography is by George C Williams, editing is by Ruben. The film is bankrolled by Prince Pictures and is distributed by Udhayanidhi Stalin's Red Giant Movies. Sardar clashed with Sivakarthikeyan's romantic comedy Prince on the opening day.
