Kirik Party was one of the early hits in actor-filmmaker Rakshit Shetty’s career. Written by Rakshit and based on his experiences in engineering college, the film came out after the Malayalam hit Premam, and was widely speculated to be an unofficial remake of the latter. While he admits that he was inspired to include a few elements from Premam in Kirik Party, the script was ready much earlier, only that he got the confidence to make it after seeing the Malayalam film and how successful it became. Rakshit was actually trying to get Avane Srimannarayana (ASN) going when he chanced upon Premam. ASN, he realized was going to take a lot of time and money, so he chose to do another film with quicker turnaround – Kirik Party.

Ever since Kirik Party came out, Rakshit has often been asked about a possible sequel, an idea that he has entertained. In fact, when he once tweeted about his upcoming slate of films, he had mentioned Richard Anthony (the prequel and sequel of Ulidavaru Kandanthe), a two-part Punyakoti and Midway to Moksha as his immediate priorities. Kirik Party 2, he had said, was still on the cards, but that he had other plans for it. Earlier today, while speaking to the media in Kochi for the promotions of Sapta Sagaradaache Ello Side B, which will release on November 17, Rakshit opened up about those plans and it’s not exactly what his fans have been hoping for.
Turns out, Rakshit is only looking at producing Kirik Party 2. He will not act and is keen to make it a franchise with newcomers on the cast. Incidentally, the original film was also pretty much in that mould, and had introduced Rashmika Mandanna and Samyuktha Hegde to audiences. Written by Rakshit, it was Kantara maker Rishab Shetty’s second directorial only, while most of the supporting cast also included newcomers.
