A day after filmmaker Nagashekar excitedly spoke about getting a US release for one of his films for the very first time with Sanju Weds Geetha 2, his plans were halted, albeit temporarily. Early on January 9, reports emerged that the Srinagara Kitty and Rachita Ram-led film would not release on January 10, although, at that point the reason was unclear.
When OTTPlay reached out to the PR team, we were told that the release had been stayed and that Nagashekar and Kitty were trying to solve the impasse. The hope was to be able to release on January 10, but that was not to be. A source then told us that the stay order had come from a Hyderabad-based producer, seeking repayment of dues to the tune of Rs 7 crore.
Sanju Weds Geetha 2 producer Chalavadi Kumar headed to Hyderabad and got the stay vacated on January 10, by which time the film’s release had been postponed, with a new date set to be announced. In a video message outside the Hyderabad city civil court premises, Chalavadi Kumar explained that the issue cropped up because Nagashekar’s last directorial, the Telugu remake of Love Mocktail, Gurthunda Seethakalam had failed at the box office.
One of the producers of Gurthunda Seethakalam, Rama Rao Chintapalli, was assured that Nagashekar would make another film for his banner to cover the loss, or that the director would compensate the former in due course of time. While this is the reason cited for the injunction order, Chalavadi Kumar’s legal counsel claims that it was done with malicious intent to prevent the release of a Kannada film at a time when a major Telugu movie was hitting screens. Sanju Weds Geetha 2 screens had been allotted to this Telugu movie after the postponement.
With the legal hurdles cleared, the team will now announce a new release date on January 11. A love story, Sanju Weds Geetha 2, which is said to be based on true events, also explores the sericulture industry.
