It seems fans are not the only ones frustrated by a lack of clarity regarding a third Munna Bhai film. Actor Sanjay Dutt, who had starred in the first two films as the titular character, recently made an earnest appeal to fans to get the ball rolling on the sequel’s development.
Dutt made the comments at an event in Nagpur which had been organised to celebrate the 19th anniversary of Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. There had been speculations of another sequel to the fan favourite film being considered, although the news had not been confirmed by makers. According to a report in IANS, Dutt had urged the fans at the event to push director Rajkumar Hirani to helm a third Munna Bhai film.
The actor added that he had previously spoken to the director about it several times, but it yielded no results. Dutt’s comments were reportedly well-received by the audience.
In a conversation with Bollywood Hungama, the film’s producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra had expressed his disappointment at no headway being made on the development of a new Munna Bhai film.
If confirmed, the film would be the third instalment in the Munna Bhai film series, followed by the original 2003 film and its 2006 sequel Lage Raho Munna Bhai. The films revolve around the story of the titular protagonist, a gangster who decides to enrol in medical college to become a doctor, so as to fulfil the lifelong dream of his parents.
Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. and Lage Raho Munna Bhai are available to stream on Netflix.
