The re-release of Sanam Teri Kasam, which achieved cult status nine years after its release, has been one of the most delightful surprises for many fans. The film, featuring Harshvardhan Rane and Mawra Hocane in the lead roles, tanked during its initial release, but on social media, fans couldn't stop adoring the heartbreaking love story. Now, it became a smashing success during its re-release, as many other films we have seen in the past year.
In a recent interview with Mid Day, producer Deepak Mukut revealed that the number of screens in the film was initially set at 60 but was later raised in response to audience demand. About 70 admirers showed up at their office and requested them to re-release the film over Valentine's Week, even though they hadn't planned to. At first, Mukut was rather sceptical because there's a lot of rivalry between Deva and Loveyapa. He added that he was astonished by the enormous volume of advance bookings on online booking websites. Despite losing Rs 25 crore in its initial 2016 run, the film was a commercial triumph upon its re-release. The network of 350 theatres features nearly 400 screens. Shows have been growing in their number of exhibitors in a natural way.
Although the romantic comedy bombed at the box office, it eventually found an audience on OTT. However, that isn't the sole element propelling its theatrical debut. According to trade expert Girish Wankhede, it has benefitted even more from the lack of excitement surrounding the new films.
He claims that Badass Ravi Kumar is performing well, while Loveyapa is starting slowly. There has been a decline in the tracking of new releases. Sanam Teri Kasam is dominating the box office. The number of screens it will be expanded to can only be determined after Saturday.
According to Vishek Chauhan, an exhibitor from Bihar, he upped the number of shows he had allocated for his Patna and Gaya theatres from one during advance booking to eighty by the time the film premiered yesterday. He looked into it when the number of shows went up and found that a few months ago, a group of influencers had persuaded the film's producer to re-release it.
He further added that on Friday, with Valentine's Day and Rose Day just around the horizon, the young people who had never seen it in a theatre turned it into a fear of missing out (FOMO) moment. Young couples are attending the film, so it's not a corporate booking. They have sold out all of our events for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The greatest opening for a re-release so far is Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013), which took in Rs 1.5 crore. The potential value of this one might reach Rs. 8 crore. He predicts that Loveyapa will have a difficult time earning Rs 1.5 crore.
Sanam Teri Kasam is available to stream on JioCinema (OTTplay Premium) and ZEE5 (OTTplay Premium).
