Fans waiting to watch Salute, Dulquer Salmaan’s first Malayalam release in 2021, in theatres might be a tad disappointed that the pandemic’s effect on cinema halls has forced the makers to opt for a direct-to-OTT release. However, this would mean that the movie will now reach a larger section of the audience.
The Rosshan Andrrews directorial was initially set to hit theatres on January 14 this year but was postponed as the number of COVID-19 cases in Kerala saw a surge, with the government even mulling the shutdown of cinema halls. However, unlike the other films that had pushed their release dates, the makers of Salute last week announced that the movie will now directly release on an OTT platform.
What is Salute about?
The movie’s trailer hints at an investigation carried out by Dulquer’s police officer character Aravind Karunakaran. The character seems to be obsessed with solving the case, that it also takes a toll on personal relationships.
Salute, scripted by Bobby and Sanjay who had earlier crafted the brilliant thriller Mumbai Police starring Prithviraj Sukumaran, has Manoj K Jayan playing Aravind’s brother and senior officer. Diana Penty will be making her debut in South through the Malayalam film, which also stars Saniya Iyyappan, Binu Pappu, Deepak Parambol, Lakshmi Gopalaswamy and Vijayakumar.
The film also marks the first time Dulquer will be seen playing a cop in a full-length role. He had appeared as a cop in the denouement of Lal Jose’s Vikramadithyan.
When is Salute releasing?
Dulquer, who is also the producer of Salute, recently confirmed that the movie will release on Sony LIV on March 18. This will also mark the actor’s first direct-to-OTT release. The movie will available to stream in Malayalam, Hindi, Telugu, Tamil and Kannada. Salute is also the second film written by Bobby and Sanjay after Tovino Thomas-starrer Kaanekkaane that will be streaming on the platform.
