Gone are the days when heroes in films were the hallmark of all things good. Today, a flawed hero, one whose characteristics would have hitherto been associated with a villain, is the trademark of a commercially successful character. These heroes with grey shades, like Rocky Bhai, Pushpa, etc., are idolized far more than the straight-laced ones. As commercially viable as these characters and films are, actor Pramod, who plays a pivotal role in Salaar, says that it will eventually have an unpleasant impact on society.

Grey-shade heroes will have a negative impact on society: Pramod

Speaking to RJ Nethra on Star Express, Pramod, who will soon be seen in the Kannada film Bhuvanam Gaganam, which releases on February 14, spoke on this disturbing trend. “Sometimes I think that the success of such films sends a wrong message to society. Right now, only those characters that strike a chord with audiences are being written, which, I believe will have a negative impact on society someday. Recently, I came across a crime news report in which it was said that the perpetrator was inspired by something he saw in a film. Inspiring people to commit crimes is never the intention of a film team; it’s to entertain people, but there is no denying that people do get inspired,” said the actor.

Pramod adds that the influence of cinema on audiences can never be discounted. “There was a time when people were inspired by Dr Rajkumar’s films, like, for instance, Bangarada Manushya, and left their city lives behind to return to their villages and pursue farming. If that is the kind of impact cinema can create, those working in films have a big responsibility in terms of the messaging brought to the screen,” says the actor.

Pramod cites the example of the hit film Bheema, the core message of which was against drug abuse. “The sad reality is that in the moment, the film entertained audiences, but beyond that, it did no have a ground level impact. Ideally, the message should have been carried forward,” he says.
