At Sunday's 30th Screen Actors Guild Awards, Oppenheimer took home multiple statues, including best cast, lead actor (Cillian Murphy), and supporting actor (Robert Downey Jr.). Last summer's surprise box office smash and current Oscar frontrunner is the biopic about J. Robert Oppenheimer and the creation of the atomic bomb.

Succession won best ensemble in a drama series for its last season of family power grabs and backstabbing, while The Bear won best comedy series ensemble for its pressure cooker take on restaurant life. Several of the awardees spoke openly about the hardships and sacrifices that define a career in the arts, making for an unpredictable and candid evening full of sure-things, surprises, and f-bombs.

Elizabeth Debicki, star of The Crown, shocked everyone by winning leading actress in a drama series for her superb portrayal of Princess Diana, while Pedro Pascal stunned everyone by taking home the trophy for his portrayal of a zombie apocalypse survivor in The Last of Us. Even Pascal appeared taken aback by his triumph, considering Succession stars Sarah Snook and Kieran Culkin were favourites to win. "I'm feeling a bit tipsy," he conceded. "I believed I could imbibe." Even without shoes, Debecki confessed that she did not expect to win and was speechless.

Other winners felt their victory was assured. The Bear star Jeremy Allen White, who plays a bright but troubled restauranteur, won the award for outstanding actor in a comedy series for two years running. Co-star Ayo Edebiri, who plays a sous cook with loftier ambitions in the film, took up the trophy for Best Leading Actress in a Comedy. They were both honoured with Emmys and Golden Globes not long ago.

The prime acting honours for a television movie or miniseries went to Beef co-stars Steven Yeun and Ali Wong, who play two complete strangers whose lives cross paths during a road rage incident. All three actors—White, Edebiri, and the rest—had won Golden Globes and Emmys.

Lily Gladstone won the award for Best Actress in Killers of the Flower Moon for portraying an Osage woman betrayed by her husband and targeted for her wealth in a complex plot. "Keep speaking your truth." Gladstone urged the players in the group, saying, "We bring empathy into a world that needs it."

Da'Vine is here. In The Holdovers, Joy Randolph played a heartbroken cafeteria manager and won the SAG category for outstanding supporting actress. She has won practically every major category this awards season. In response to the enthusiastic audience, Randolph offered the following advice to aspiring actors: "Keep going." He went on to say, "Your life can change in a day."
