Remember Hannah Waddingham’s Rebecca Welton in Ted Lasso, who gained ownership of an English Premier League football team – AFC Richmond – as a divorce settlement and went from being determined to ruin the team and its chances at success to being its major support system? Well, looks like Mindy Kaling has taken a leaf out of Ted Lasso and created a different version of it with Kate Hudson as the boss of a basketball team.

Running Point is Kaling’s latest series, a sports comedy in which Hudson is Isla Gordon, who has been overlooked all her life, until, one day, she becomes the President of the family business, a basketball franchise called the Los Angeles Waves. This also means that she has to step up and prove to all her naysayers, including her team and their fans, the board of the company, the sports world, her family, etc., that she is, indeed, the right person for the job.

All 10-episodes of the show are set to drop on Netflix, with the streamer announcing February 27 as its release date. Joining Hudson on the cast of Netflix's Running Point are Brenda Song (The Last Showgirl), Drew Tarver, Scott MacArthur, Fabrizio Guido, Toby Sandeman, Chet Hanks, Jay Ellis, Scott Evans, Dane DiLiegro, Roberto Sanchez, Uche Agada and New Girl's Max Greenfield, among others.

Song will play Ali Lee, Isla’s chief of staff and former college mates, who understands the complex politics of the latter’s family and how to work around it. Lee is described as funny and tough, just the right combination for even the biggest guy on the team to be scared of her - a little like Juno Temple’s Keeley Jones from Ted Lasso, perhaps?

Created by Elaine Ko, Mindy Kaling, Ike Barinholtz and David Stassen, Running Point has the latter three credited as showrunners as well. A trailer for the show is expected shortly.
