Popular bureaucrat, poet Rasamayi Balakishan recently backed a Telangana-centric period drama Rudrangi under his home banner Rasamayi Films. Ajay Samrat, a former associate of RRR, Baahubali writer Vijayendra Prasad, turned a director for the film, which was inspired by true incidents in Telangana in the 1940s and 50s. The film hit screens across Telugu states recently.
Jagapathi Babu, Mamta Mohandas, Vimala Raman, Ganavi Laxman and Ashish Gandhi played key roles in the film that opened to positive reviews from critics and had a modest run in theatres. After its brief theatrical run, Rudrangi is now out on OTT. Leading OTT player Amazon Prime Video acquired its post-theatrical streaming rights and began premiering the film this week.
The makers claim Rudrangi is a mix of fact and fiction. Mallesh’s life turns topsy-turvy when a zamindar kills his grandfather and separates him from his cousin Rudrangi. He soon wins the trust of a landlord Bhimrao and leads a dignified existence. Bhimrao, who has multiple wives - Mirabai and Jwalabai - lusts after another village woman. What connects Mallesh to this woman and how far will he go to fight for her honour?
“While Rudrangi has its share of eccentricities, the director Ajay Samrat leaves a lasting impression with his eye for drama, nuanced understanding of human emotions and commercial appeal. With powerful performances by Jagapathi Babu, Mamta Mohandas and Ashish Gandhi, this is a gripping period tale,” OTTplay.com's critic wrote about the film during its theatrical release.
Santosh Shanamoni is the cinematographer of the drama which had music by Nawfal Raja Ais. Nageswara Reddy Bonthala edited the film while Aayesha Mariam designed the costumes. Jashuva, Ram Sunkara are the action directors. Rudrangi, which has an impressive bunch of young talent and known faces, has a good chance of impressing viewers on OTT with its storytelling, costumes, detailing of the Telangana period backdrop.
