Debutant filmmaker Jithu Madhavan’s horror-comedy Romancham, which released to largely positive reviews last week, had also caught the attention of major streaming platforms soon after it hit theatres.
While the co-producer of the movie, director Johnpaul George, had pleaded online to the audience to ensure that Romancham doesn’t meet the fate of his debut directorial Guppy, the horror-comedy, which has Soubin Shahir and Arjun Ashokan as part of the cast, opened to good reviews. The audience too picked the movie over the other releases including Joju George’s Iratta, Anu Sithara’s Momo in Dubai and Vishnu Unnikrishann’s Vedikettu the past weekend.

Romancham’s initial reviews reportedly also prompted Disney+ Hotstar to purchase its streaming rights and Asianet to buy its satellite rights. The movie is expected to drop on the OTT platform only next month and this could be delayed even further, considering its box office performance. Hotstar didn’t stick to the usual one-month OTT release window of its previous three releases – Basil Joseph’s Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey, Vineeth Sreenivasan’s Mukundan Unni Associates or the upcoming Unni Mukundan-starrer Malikappuram, letting the movies have an extended run in theatres and dropping the movies only in their final leg. Romancham too is expected to follow the same.
Apart from Soubin, Arjun and Chemban Vinod Jose, Romancham, which is apparently based on a true story that happened to its filmmaker Jithu and friends, also has Siju Sunny, Afzal PH, Anantharaman Ajay, Abin Bino, Sajin Gopu and Jagadeesh Kumar as part of the cast.
The film revolves around what happens to a group of youngsters living in a house in Bengaluru in 2007, when they begin to start playing a game of Ouija. What starts out as fun, soon has supernatural consequences with guests – invited and uninvited – arriving to turn their life topsy turvy. The movie has music by Sushin Shyam.
