Kaley Cuoco is back with another entertaining watch, this time by donning the role of Emma, a suburban mom who goes on ‘little work trips’ to send her victims seamlessly into the afterlife. Role Play is a spy-thriller in Tom Cruise’ Knight and Day tradition but shifts gear and gender.

Role Play is directed by Thomas Vincent and will premiere on Prime Video on January 12, 2024. Starring Emmy nominee David Oyelowo as her husband, the film is well-balanced in its performative aspect. The film dropped its trailer on November 15, 2023.

Instead of a dashing, goon-fighting Bond-esque hero, Role Play’s trailer features an ordinary couple David and Emma, with two children, living a happy stable life. For their anniversary, they decide to spice up their loving but recently static marriage. Having a job and two kids does that to the best of us.

But their desire to enliven the bedroom culminates in a risqué bit of roleplay that has consequences far messier than expected. Instead of spilt orange juice and uneven bangs, David is suddenly thrust upon with information from the government that his wife may be wanted in multiple countries for manslaughter, being a hired killer.

Initially disbelieving, then denying, David is forced to accept the truth. And he does it in the most wholesome way possible. By catching the next flight to wherever his wife is on the planet, and fighting by her side, despite being lousy at it.

Kaley Cuoco is an assassin for hire who wishes to live her bloody past behind and simply enjoy a happy life with her family. But when she reveals it to her boss, it is evident that the secret organization is not happy with her retirement and would not mind trying to keep her, by encharming or embalming her.

Butterfly fame filmmaker Thomas Vincent is steady in his vision which smoothly fuses the subtext with the text, of a roleplay unveiling the multiple roles Emma has essayed throughout her illustrious career, before it lets her either- rest in peace or retire in some of it.
