Carmen and Juni are back to save the world yet again, as the Spy Kids franchise is gearing up to be relaunched soon. And the film franchise has found a new home on Netflix.
According to a report in The Hollywood Reporter, the streaming giant has partnered with the franchise creator, Robert Rodriguez, who will also helm the upcoming film. The partnership was announced as the popular action adventure franchise turns 21 years old this year.
The films revolve around the siblings, Carmen Cortez and Juni Cortez. After discovering that their parents are spies and have been kidnapped, the duo go on a mission to rescue them. They eventually end up as spies themselves working for their parents’ organisation, in a newly-formed spy kids division. After the children become adults, they continue working for the OSS as agents.
In the films, Alexa Vega starred as Carmen Cortez while Daryl Sabara essayed the role of Juni Cortez. Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino portrayed the kids’ parents.
Rodriguez has written and directed all four films in the franchise - Spy Kids (2001), Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams (2002), Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over (2003) and Spy Kids: All the Time in the World (2011). The franchise has also spawned an animated television series called Spy Kids: Mission Critical. The Netflix show, which ran for two seasons, was a reboot of the franchise.
The upcoming relaunch film will also be written and directed by Rodriguez, who is also well known for his work on The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl, Sin City and The Book of Boba Fett.
