The art of method acting is not new, but conversations around it are more rampant now than ever. Actors going to extreme lengths to get into characters that are not just demanding but also very intense always churn out results no one can imagine. One such movie that saw an actor going to such extremes is The Lighthouse. A movie about two lighthouse keepers who have been living a life of loneliness, played by Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson, is one of the best films of 2019 and one that also had an Oscar nod to itself. However, the marvelous results came out of a very demanding process that once had The Batman star drunk on set, throwing up, and even pissing himself. The actor once recalled shooting a scene and how physically and mentally demanding it was.
Directed by Robert Eggers, The Lighthouse was a demanding shoot that had Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson at the center as the story revolves around their characters. The madness of the film lies in the fact that these two characters exist in the middle of nowhere with no access to sanity. Robert Pattinson once, in conversation with Esquire, recalled how maddening the shoot was and how he even had to eat mud to play a mad character. Read on to know everything you should about the same.
“Because you’re playing a mad person, it means you can sort of be mad the whole time,” Pattinson said. “Well, not the whole time, but for like an hour before the scene. You can literally just be sitting on the floor growling and licking up puddles of mud.” But the real challenge for Pattinson amid eating mud and acting mad came when he was actually set to do scenes that demanded him to completely immerse himself. Robert Pattinson took up the drinking habit of his character, as in the film the two are often seen getting drunk on kerosene. He recalled how he drank so much that he blacked out during the scenes.
“[I was] basically unconscious the whole time. It was crazy,” Robert Pattinson said. “I spent so much time making myself throw up. Pissing my pants. It’s the most revolting thing. I don’t know, maybe it’s really annoying.” And we can see the results that emerged from this. There was also a moment where he almost actually punched Willem Dafoe.
Talking about a scene with the Spider-Man star, Robert Pattinson recalls how things got taken a bit too far for Dafoe’s comfort. “There’s a scene where Willem’s kind of sleeping on me and we’re really, really drunk. I felt like we were completely lost in the scene and I’m sitting there trying to make myself gag and Robert [Eggers] told me off because Willem’s looking at him going: ‘If he throws up on me, I’m leaving the set.’ I had absolutely no idea this whole drama was unfolding.”
