Netflix is ready to serve Ripley for its summer welcome banquet. The Tudum series adaptation comes after the hit 1999 movie based on Patricia Highsmith’s novel of the same name, The Talented Mr. Ripley, starring a young Matt Damon. Though Highsmith has written five Ripley novels, mainly the first one has been explored and adapted for cinematic representation.
The latest adaptation will star Andrew Scott of Sherlock and Fleabag fame in the iconic role of Mr. Ripley, or here, just Ripley. The 8-episode show will stream April 4, 2024, featuring the starry likes of Emma star Johnny Flynn, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood star Dakota Fanning, as well as John Malkovich, Pasquale Esposito, and Eliot Sumner.
Created and directed by Steven Zaillian, who has written hit projects like Schindler’s List and The Irishman, Ripley dropped a brief teasing clip recently. The clip further affirmed the show’s black and white, vintage yet sinister setting with an ominous background music that paints Tom Ripley, aka Andrew Scott, in a menacing and mysterious light, foreboding of the chaos he is about to leave in his path.
The teaser offers an exquisite peek into the film’s nuanced editing and cinematography, while the audience anticipates Scott to play a particular tune from his wide acting range, stretching from criminal mastermind to a sexy, kind religious figure. Ripley’s teaser is not here to offer any updates about the plot, but to create an ambience of opulence, hedonism, mystery, murder, and cunning plots, all in the play of two shades, light and shadow.
The official plot of Ripley highlights Andrew Scott’s Tom Ripley’s journey from being a barely-scraping grifter in early ‘60s New York to stepping into a life of deceit, complexities, fraud, and murder. Hired by a wealthy businessman to coax or lure his hedonistic son Dickie Greenleaf to come back home from Italy, Ripley, then a ‘nobody’ sets off. Whether he sails to his doom or that of others is to be seen in April 2024.
