Rahul Roy shot to instant fame after starring in the lead role in Mahesh Bhatt's 1990 hit, Aashiqui. After a hiatus, the actor is back in action, with the latest being Kanu Behl’s Agra, which received a standing ovation at this year's Cannes Film Festival.

In a recent interview with Bollywood Hungama, the actor revealed some facts about his debut film, more than 30 years after its release.

Speaking about how he landed the film, Rahul said that his mother, who was a writer, had introduced him to director Mahesh Bhatt.

The actor said that he was introduced to Bhatt for the first time at the filmmaker's office in Juhu, Mumbai. Being a novice in the industry, he confessed that he did not have any contacts or connections. But to his astonishment, within just 5 minutes of their initial meeting, Bhatt assured him that he would play the lead in Aashiqui.

Reflecting on the film's release, Roy shared a heartwarming anecdote. He recounted an incident where Mahesh Bhatt and his brother Mukesh accompanied him to a screening at Metro Cinema. Outside the theatre, Roy was overwhelmed by the support of the crowd, which cheered for him passionately.

The success of Aashiqui propelled Rahul Roy into the spotlight, inundating him with numerous film offers from renowned filmmakers. Astoundingly, within a span of just 11 days, Rahul signed a staggering 47 films. However, he disclosed that his remuneration for Aashiqui was a meagre Rs 30,000.

Besides launching Rahul's career, Aashiqui also served as a platform for Anu Aggarwal, the film's female lead.

Rahul faced a major setback when he suffered a brain stroke in 2020. However, the actor said that he has made commendable progress in his recovery and has since returned to work.

Rahul's new film, Kanu Behl's Agra, premiered at this year's Cannes Film Festival and received a standing ovation.

He was last seen in the ZEE5 original film Cabaret, which was produced by Pooja Bhatt.

The actor looks all set for a fruitful second inning of his career.
