Chris McKay's 2023 film Renfield brought the eponymous Bram Stoker character to life on the big screen with Nicholas Hoult playing the titular role. Set in the classic Stoker monster world, the film follows Renfield's attempts to rid himself from the clutches of his torturing, narcissistic boss, the famous Transylvanian vampire Count Dracula (played by the one, and the only, Nicolas Cage).

Renfield, the film, is based on the well-known comic book writer Robert Kirkman's story which was adapted to the screen by screenwriter Ryan Ridley. The film won praise for McKay's treatment of the subject with a blend of horror and humour but despite the encouraging reviews, it could not yield good results at the box office. Renfield, due to stiff competition offered by films like The Pope's Exorcist, The Super Mario Bros. Movie and John Wick: Chapter 4, folded at the box office with $26.7 million collections.

Where to watch Renfield on OTT

But those figures should not deter us from enjoying the film on the small screen, considering it boasts an exciting ensemble cast also including Awkwafina, Ben Schwartz, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Brandon Scott Jones and others. Renfield debuted on OTT on August 15 and Indian OTT consumers can stream the film on Jio Cinema.

Classic horror shared universe

Another interesting bit of trivia concerning Renfield is that the film was billed at one point to be a part of the larger 'shared universe' conceived by Universal Pictures. This fictional universe was to solely focus on classic horror stories and was kicked off by Dracula Untold in 2014, which turned out to be a box office dud. Universal would then pitch the Tom Cruise starrer The Mummy (2017) as the first film of the series but that film, too, ended up being a critical and commercial failure. As a result, Robert Kirkman's Renfield entered a 'development hell' for a while before it was picked up by a different studio, Skybound Entertainment.
