Rekhachithram, starring Asif Ali along with Anaswara Rajan, has made its much-awaited OTT debut on Sony Liv on March 6, 2025. The Malayalam mystery thriller arrived on OTT, a day earlier than announced, but we are not complaining. Netizens, who watched the movie, are raving about Rekhachithram’s performance and plot. But more than anything else, netizens are celebrating Mammootty’s appearance in the Asif Ali-starrer, calling it ‘best AI recreation in Indian cinema’. Read on to know how fans have been hailing Mammootty’s presence in Jofin T Chacko directorial.
The one factor that has single-handedly elevated the cinematic experience of Rekhachithram is the small sequence where Mammootty is portrayed as his 80s self. For those of you who are yet to watch Rekhachithram, the film seeks to find out what happened to a young girl, who was last spotted at the sets of the 1985 film, Kathodu Kathoram. This meant that Mammootty of that era needed to be present in the movie and makers did just that with the help of AI technology.
Now, netizens are praising the efforts of director Jofin T Chacko and his technical team for bringing alive the vintage Mammootty back on screen.
Sharing a clip of Mammootty’s entry in the 2025 film, a netizen wrote, “Goosebumps scene from #Rekhachithram’ and said it was “The Best Work From Malayalam Cinema”. Yet another netizen said, “Presenting the Best AI Recreation in Indian Cinema.” Some also pointed out that the effort is praise-worthy, considering the budget of Malayalam films that is far lesser than even other south film industries of Tamil and Telugu
Some fans also recounted how the theatres erupted at this scene, during the time of Rekhachithram’s theatrical run.
Even when the buzz is mostly about Mammootty’s AI entry, netizens also praised Asif Ali and the rest of the cast’s performance, storyline and more.
The Rekhachithram plot follows a cop who stumbles upon a 40-year-old case about a young girl, Rekha, who was last spotted at the film set of the Mammootty-starrer.
