Malayalam star Asif Ali seems to have another blockbuster on the cards after Kishkindha Kaandam last year. His latest film Rekhachithram, which also has Anaswara Rajan in the lead, got off to a brilliant start at the Kerala box office, with the movie raking in Rs 2 Cr on its opening day, as per industry trackers Sacnilk.

The film, which is helmed by The Priest director Jofin T Chacko, is a mystery-thriller that revolves around an investigation into a body, which was buried almost 40 years ago and the suspected person was last spotted on the sets of Mammootty’s Kaathodu Kaathoram in 1985.

Rekhachithram Day 1 box office collection trumps Marco and Identity

According to ticketing app Book My Show, the movie saw close to 79k bookings on Thursday, which was a working day. Buoyed by the largely positive reviews , the film is set for a massive weekend that could see it cross Rs 10 Cr in the Indian market by the end of Sunday.

Unni Mukundan’s Marco and Tovino Thomas’ Identity are the only other big Malayalam releases playing in theatres, but judging by the box office performances of the film in the recent few days, they are unlikely to pose a threat to the film. Shankar and Ram Charan’s Game Changer and Arjun Ashokan and Anaswara’s Ennu Swantham Punyalan are the other new releases, playing in theatres.

Does Rekhachithram have Mammootty in it?

The flashback portions of the film, which revolve around as Anaswara’s character Rekha, is set in the 1980s and most of this is on the sets of Bharathan’s Kaathodu Kaathoram, which stars Mammootty. The film boasts a host of surprise appearances from several legends – making it a fitting tribute to the 80s, which was a golden period for Malayalam cinema.

Other actors such as Siddique, Zarin Shihab, Jagadeesh and Sreekanth Murali are also part of the movie.
