Rekhachithram, starring Asif Ali and Anaswara Rajan, has impressed audiences to emerge as the first hit in Malayalam in 2025. Though the mystery thriller saw a dip in its collections on day 12, it earned around Rs 42.15 crore in worldwide collections, according to industry tracker Sacnilk. Here’s the break-up of Rekhachithram’s box office numbers:
Rekhachithram saw a dip in its earnings on day 12, which is its second Monday, with a collection of Rs 0.5 crore. However, this could be attributed to the working day as the film minted Rs 1.85 crore and Rs 1.55 crore on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
The overall India gross collection of the thriller is at 25.15 crore, while the overseas collection is at Rs 17 crore, taking the worldwide collection to 42.15 crore.
None of the other Malayalam releases of the year have been giving much competition to Rekhachithram, which hit the screens on January 9, 2025. Tovino Thomas’ Identity, which was the first major Malayalam release of the year, collected around Rs 16.49 crore and is in the second spot after Rekhachithram. Basil Joseph-starrer Pravinkoodu Shappu was released on January 16, 2025, to mixed reviews and collected Rs 4.02 crore so far. Notably, Marco, a 2024 Christmas release, has made Rs 115 crore and is still running in theatres.
The next major release in Malayalam is Dominic and the Ladies' Purse, starring Mammootty in the lead with Gokul Suresh. Expectations are high for this film, which marks the Malayalam directorial debut of Gautham Vasudev Menon. Dominic and the Ladies' Purse will be released in theatres on January 23, 2025.
Meanwhile, Rekhachithram also has a connection to Mammootty. Rekhachithram director Jofin T Chacko has expertly linked his film to the megastar's 1985 hit film Kaathodu Kaathoram. The protagonist cop Vivek, played by Asif Ali, goes after a case of a woman who vanished from the film set four decades ago.
This has given an interesting layer to the film, which is getting much love from audiences in Kerala for its compelling plot and stellar performances.
