Rekha and Madhuri Dixit had blown away our minds with characters like Umrao Jaan and Chandramukhi respectively through their perfect portrayal of the role of courtesans. They will now reportedly be bringing back their magic in the upcoming web series of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi, which will be streaming on Netflix.
The series is touted to shine light on the lives of courtesans during the pre-independence era. This will be the second time the actresses will be sharing screen space after 2001’s Lajja.
Rekha, who is a trained dancer, is also an impeccable performer as evident from her roles like Umrao Jaan in the 1981 movie of the same name. Adapted from the Urdu Novel, Umrao Jaan Ada, the movie is a tale of the courtesan rise to fame from Lucknow.
Similarly, Madhuri Dixit is also a perfectionist when it comes to dance as she is a trained Kathak performer. She has left an indelible mark through her dance performance on screen in movies like Devdas, where she played the enigmatic courtesan Chandramukhi.
The series will also mark Bhansali’s digital debut. Heeramandi is speculated to have all the trademark Bhansali elements including love, politics, betrayal, wealth, colour, grand setting and many more.
The filmmaker is currently awaiting the release of Gangubhai Kathiawadi, starring Alia Bhatt in the titular role.
