The GV Prakash Kumar-starrer Rebel is gearing up for release on March 22. Directed by debutant filmmaker Nikesh RS, Rebel stars Premalu-fame Mamitha Baiju as the female lead in her Tamil debut. The period political drama is set against the backdrop of Munnar and talks about the issues faced by Tamil students in a place dominated by a Malayalam-speaking population.
Rebel is set to hit big screens on March 22, Friday. The film will have composer-turned-actor GV Prakash play the lead role. The film will have a solo release in Tamil Nadu, with no major box office competitors. Rebel is directed by Nikesh RS in his directorial debut.
The trailer of the film was launched recently. It shows a group of Tamil students studying in Munnar, a place which is dominated by people speaking Malayalam. While Rebel first promises to be a cross-cultural love story after a Tamil boy falls in love with a Malayalee girl, the trailer soon changes to a serious tone with the protagonist voicing out for people of his mother tongue. The film is said to be based on true events. GV Prakash's trailer shows Rebel to be action-packed and high on revolt.
Pretty much about the plot is said in the promotional materials released by the makers of the film. Rebel is a political period drama set in the 80s Munnar. While Mamitha Baiju will play a Malayalee in the film, GV Prakash will play a Tamil boy who comes to her college. The film is said to be inspired by a collection of true incidents. Speaking about the film GV Prakash Kumar had said that Rebel’s screenplay will go back and forth in timeline, going further back from the 80s.

Rebel marks Mamitha’s debut in Tamil. The actor was seen in this year’s hit film Premalu. Directed by debutant Nikesh RS, Rebel is shot by Arun Radhakrishnan, with GV Prakash Kumar also scoring the music. Pappanadu C Uthayakumar has handled the art direction with Vetre Krishnan as the editor.
The makers have not revealed the OTT partner of the film. However, like any other films, after its minimum run at the box office, Rebel is expected to stream on a digital platform.
