RDX overtakes Drishyam box office record, can it cross Rs 100 Cr before OTT release?

The success of debutant filmmaker Nahas Hidayath’s action thriller RDX: Robert Dony Xavier has been a huge relief for theatre exhibitors in Kerala. The movie, which is still running with decent occupancy almost three weeks after its release, is also now taking down the box office records set by superstar-driven films.

RDX, which has Shane Nigam, Antony Varghese and Neeraj Madhav in the lead, emerged as the Onam box-office winner , blowing away its competition – Dulquer Salmaan’s King of Kotha and Nivin Pauly’s Ramachandra Boss and Co. But it didn’t stop there, the film raced to Rs 50 crore box office earnings in a record nine days and have been surpassing some major Malayalam superhits since then.

RDX surpasses Mohanlal’s Drishyam at Kerala box office

The movie, which has now grossed Rs 47 crore from Kerala box office and Rs 75 crore worldwide, has recently surpassed Mohanlal’s Drishyam, which had collected Rs 74 crore in 2013. The film has next set its sights on Dulquer’s Kurup and Mammootty’s Bheeshma Parvam – which had earned Rs 81 crore and Rs 87 crore at the box office, despite being the initial few theatrical releases in Malayalam post-pandemic.

It remains to be seen if RDX can breach the Rs 100 crore barrier in worldwide box office gross, ahead of its OTT release. Mohanlal’s Lucifer and Pulimurugan that have collected Rs 127 crore and Rs 152 crore worldwide stand in the way, along with Tovino Thomas and Asif Ali-starrer 2018: Everyone Is A Hero that is the highest-grossing Malayalam movie of all time, raking in a worldwide box office collection of Rs 178 Cr. 

RDX OTT release date

RDX’s OTT rights were sold to Netflix , even before its theatrical release. The streaming platform is expected to release the film by the end of September or beginning of October.
