Filmmaker Hari’s action-drama Rathnam is all set to be released in theatres this week. After a gap of two years, the director is gearing up to deliver yet another complete action drama for Tamil audiences, who have been waiting for a good commercial film since the beginning of the year. Headlined by Vishal, the movie revolves around Rathnam, who works as a henchman. The movie is about how he tries to save a girl, Janani (Priya Bhavani Shankar), from a bunch of goons.
The action drama is slated to be released in theatres on April 26. The film was to clash with Sundar C’s horror drama Aranmanai 4 at the box office, which was also scheduled to be released on the same day. However, the makers of Aranmanai 4 have chosen to avoid the clash and are releasing the movie in May. So, Vishal’s Rathnam is getting a solo release this week.
The trailer for the film begins with Samuthirakani’s character, who is seen enquiring about something that has been happening along the Andhra Pradesh-Tamil Nadu border. Vishal then makes a massy entrance. He plays Rathnam, the right-hand man of MLA Panner Selvam, played by Samuthirakani.
Vishal plays an angry young man who is on a mission to save a young woman, Janani, played by Priya Bhavani Shankar. Although not much has been revealed in the trailer, it is clear that it is about Rathnam rescuing his love interest, Janani, from a gang of goons.
From the trailer, one can make out that Rathnam is a quintessential Hari film, with the director taking bits and pieces from his previous movies and incorporating them into this movie. Hari, who is known for portraying angry young men who are ready to slash anyone who comes in their way, has employed the same style in this actioner as well.
According to the makers, the film revolves around Rathnam, who works as a henchman for MLA Panner Selvam. Priya Bhavai Shankar’s character travels to Vellore for an interview but is followed by a bunch of goons with the intention of murdering her. Rathnam comes for her rescue and becomes her protector. But who are the goons and why are they after her? How long can Rathnam protect her? All questions will be answered when Rathnam releases in theatres on April 26.
Besides Vishal and Priya Bhavani Shankar, the film also stars Samuthirakani, Yogi Babu and Gautham Vasudev Menon in supporting roles. National Award-winning composer Devi Sri Prasad, who earlier worked with Hari on Aaru, Singam and Venghai, has scored the music for Rathnam. M Sukumar serves as the cinematographer, while TS Jay has handled the editing. Hari has also written the dialogues for Rathnam.
It was earlier revealed that Rathnam's OTT rights had been purchased by Amazon Prime Video for a decent amount. The film, directed by Hari, will be available for streaming on the OTT giant after its theatrical run.
According to some reports, Rathnam is said to have been made on a budget of Rs 50 crore. It is bankrolled by Stone Bench Films and Zee Studios.
