MT Vasudevan Nair’s Randamoozham remains one of the most loved literary works in Malayalam. The much-celebrated novel was expected to get a film adaptation many years back, with Mohanlal playing the central character, Bheeman. After MT Vasudevan Nair’s demise, it was reported that the legend’s family is planning to make a movie adaptation of Randamoozham, and Mani Ratnam was reportedly offered the film. However, MT’s daughter Ashwathy Nair put the rumours to rest, recently.
Recently, it was rumoured that MT Vasudevan Nair’s family approached Mani Ratnam to direct the Randamoozham movie adaptation. The grapevine suggested that the veteran director turned down the offer due to his busy schedule, but suggested another filmmaker for the project. According to the reports, MT Vasudevan Nair’s family has been actively involved with Mani Ratnam, who shared a warm personal bond with the legendary writer, to finalise the project director.
However, the Jnanpith award winner’s daughter, dancer-filmmaker Ashwathy Nair, brushed off the rumours in a recent chat with Mathrubhumi Online. According to MT’s daughter, Mani Ratnam is not associated with Randamoozham movie adaptation, in any capacity. She further added that the veteran filmmaker had no role in the selection of Randamoozham director. However, Ashwathy Nair confirmed that the novel is indeed getting a film adaptation, very soon. The new update has left the Malayalam literature lovers and cinephiles, highly excited.
MT Vasudevan Nair’s family and the makers of Randamoozham have already finalised the director of the project, which is being made as a two-part saga, on a massive scale and budget. The script and reference materials had been provided to the director, already. Interestingly, MT had previously shot a video explaining the scenes, character arcs, mannerisms, costumes, and properties, to guide the Randamoozham director, in the film’s making. This video is included in the reference materials.
As you may know, Randamoozham was earlier supposed to be helmed by Odiyan fame director, VA Shrikumar. Mohanlal was confirmed to play the central character, Bheeman, in the film. However, the project was shelved after multiple delays, and MT Vasudevan Nair filed a lawsuit against VA Shrikumar, after the director failed to return his script.
