A year ago, when Rakshit Shetty spoke to the media waiting outside the polling booth where he’d gone to exercise his franchise in the Karnataka state elections, he was set to leave for the US for an indefinite period to work on the final draft of his next directorial, Richard Anthony. Well, it seems that Rakshit didn’t manage it back then, after which he got busy with the release and promotions of his films, Sapta Sagaradaache Ello Side A and Side B.
If Rakshit’s latest activity on X is anything to go, a Richard Anthony update maybe coming our way soon. Since last night, Rakshit has been retweeting some of his posts and interactions he had about Ulidavaru Kandanthe back in 2013. It started with his tweet from July 12, 2023, that he’d frozen on the script of Ulidavaru Kandanthe, which he followed up with reposts of several other tweets, including about a suggestion to make the film in Tamil as well and his dilemma about how to tell a tale set in Udupi for those audiences.
His last retweet, though, was of a conversation he had with Katheyondu Shuruvagide director Senna Hegde, in which he mentions that there will be no drastic changes, with the script to be frozen by May end and the team shifting base to Udupi, which was from April 22, 2013, well before he eventually actually zeroed in on the final draft.
All of this is giving fans hope that Rakshit will officially announce the start of Richard Anthony sometime in May. The film is, after all, the sequel to Ulidavaru Kandanthe. One suggestion is that this will be on May 10, which is Akshaya Tritiya and, more importantly, Parasurama Jayanti. The day is also said to have special significance in the moon cycle.
When OTTplay had last spoken to Rakshit during the promotions of Sapta Sagaradaache Ello, he had said that he foresees spending at least a year and a half from start to finish on Richard Anthony. At the time, he’d said mid-2025 was the more likely expected timeframe, but it’s been months since then and early 2026 looks like a more realistic option.
Ulidavaru Kandanthe was Rakshit's first directorial. In a neo-noir gangster flick, Ulidavaru Kandanthe had Rakshit in the role of Richie, aka Richard Anthony. The film did not work back in the day but has, since then, attained cult status. It is available on Sun NXT.
