Thugs of Malgudi is one of Rakshit Shetty's favourite scripts and is still on his list of 5-6 upcoming directorials

Almost a decade ago, Rakshit Shetty announced he was going to direct Kiccha Sudeep in a film called Thugs of Malgudi. The project, of course, never took off, but every time Rakshit is asked about it, he does not rule out the possibility of making it after all. In Canada to address a Kannada Sangha, Rakshit was yet again asked if he’d ever make Thugs of Malgudi and the answer remains, “Yes”.
Thugs of Malgudi, says Rakshit, remains one of his favourite scripts. “If I am to list the next 5 to 6 films that I will direct, Thugs of Malgudi will always be there. But I don’t know when it will all fall in place for us to take the project forward. What I am sure, right now, is that the three projects that I have to finish back-to-back are Richard Anthony, Punyakoti and Midway to Moksha. Once Richard Anthony gets going, I am confident that I will be able to wrap up these projects at a fast pace,” he said.
In January 2023, Rakshit had tweeted about the four projects that were giving him sleepless nights, as he’s been carrying these subjects around for years. These were, of course, Richard Anthony, Punyakoti 1 and 2 and Midway to Moksha. In fact, Rakshit is so focused on these films that he’s not doing Kirik Party 2 either; the movie will get made, but with another team.
Amid all this, Rakshit is also committed to a period detective film with Hemanth M Rao, called Tenali, which, he reckons he can do after he’s done with Punyakoti. Considering that Rakshit has not even started Richard Anthony, it will be a good 5-6 years by the time he’s done with Punyakoti too. The mythological film is Rakshit’s dream venture.
