There is literally no stopping Superstar Rajinikanth and his film Jailer. A month after its theatrical release, the film has slowed down its box office rampage , but it’s not lost steam completely yet. And this despite the fact that the film is now available on OTT in five languages and that an HD print was leaked online earlier. On Day 31, Jailer was still recording sold out shows in Karnataka and adding to the Rs 70+ crore gross it has contributed to the overall box office of well over Rs 630 crore. The Kannada-dubbed version has contributed Rs 10 crore so far.

The collections in Karnataka make it the first Tamil film to have grossed Rs 70 crore in the state, and the fourth non-Kannada movie to achieve this. Trade experts claim that the distribution rights in Karnataka were picked up by AV Media through Jayanna Films for Rs 10 crore, an investment that has been more than tripled in the month since the film released. In Bengaluru, for instance, Jailer still has over 40 shows, despite films like Jawan, Sapta Sagaradaache Ello Side A, Kushi, etc., taking up a bulk of the screens.

In the film, Rajinikanth plays Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, a retired jailer, whose son Arjun (Vasanth Ravi) is a police officer on the trail of a gang that’s been stealing priceless artifacts and idols from temples and replacing them with cheap replicas. When Arjun goes missing amid this investigation and the family’s safety is at stake, Muthuvel has to shake off his retired man avatar and stand up to protect his near-and-dear ones. How he goes about ensuring this forms the crux of the narrative. The film has a stellar ensemble cast on board, including Vinayakan, Ramya Krishnan, (late) Marimuthu), Jaffer Sadiq, Mirna Menon, Yogi Babu, Tamannaah, among others and cameos by Makarand Deshpande, Jackie Shroff, Mohanlal and Shivarajkumar.
