There seems to be no stopping the box office juggernaut Jailer in Kerala. The Rajinikanth-starrer, which already set several box office records in the State, is now set to overtake the lifetime gross of Kamal Haasan’s blockbuster Vikram in Kerala.
Heading into its second weekend, the Nelson Dilipkumar movie, which also has cameos from Malayalam superstar Mohanlal and Kannada star Shivarajkumar, already grossed Rs 36 crore, as per reports and is set to surpass Vikram’s lifetime gross of Rs 40 crore.
Jailer, which was released on a record number of screens in the State, also benefitted from no competition from any of the Malayalam films the past two weeks. The movie is expected to continue its good run in Kerala box office at least till August 23. The Onam releases – Dulquer Salmaan’s King of Kotha, Nivin Pauly’s Ramachandra Boss & Co and Shane Nigam, Antony Varghese and Neeraj Madhav’s RDX – will occupy the majority of screens after that.
Jailer becomes highest opening-day grosser in Kerala
The Rajinikanth film, which also had Vinayakan, Mirnaa Menon, Ramya Krishnan and Jackie Shroff as part of its cast, got off to a great start in Kerala – becoming the highest opening-day grosser across languages in the State this year. The film collected Rs 5.85 Cr on its first day and hasn’t lost much momentum in Kerala since then.
Jailer has already collected close to Rs 400 crore worldwide in a week and is set to breach the Rs 500 crore barrier during the weekend. In Tamil Nadu alone, according to industry trackers, the film closed with Rs 159 Cr in its first week and is expected to sustain its box office rampage for another week.
The film’s producers Sun Pictures had posted on their micro-blogging site that Jailer has emerged as the Tamil film to have the highest box office collection after its first week.
Jailer OTT rights sold for record price?
Soon after the film was declared a blockbuster, there were rumours that the film’s OTT rights, which rested with its producer Sun Pictures and its subsidiary OTT platform SunNXT, were also sold to Netflix for a record price. However, a source from the production house, confirmed that the film’s OTT rights have not been sold yet and dismissed the rumours of Netflix bagging it.
The movie, however, is expected to begin streaming in October 2023.
