We had earlier reported that actor-director Dhanush will be taking the great responsibility of playing the role of maestro Ilaiyaraaja in the upcoming biopic based on the latter's life. While the project sure sounds exciting, the makers have remained tight-lipped about the film's updates and progress.
With Ilaiyaraaja biopic yet to get a title, it will be bankrolled by production banners Mercuri Movies and Connekkt Media. Speculation is rife that actors Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth will play cameo roles in the film. It is to be noted that both the stalwarts have several albums scored by Ilaiyaraaja.
Dhanush, who has taken up challenging roles in the past, will be essaying one of the most ambitious roles in his career, by playing the role of music composer Ilaiyaraaja. The composer has defined the golden era of Tamil cinema by churning out several evergreen albums, most of which still hold a great nostalgic and repeat value.

Having said that, speculations suggest that actors Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth will make cameo appearances in the film. It is expected that they will play themselves in the biopic, given how each of them got iconic albums from the composer. If the news is indeed true, it will mark Dhanush’s first time working with the stars. However, no official announcement on the same have been made by the makers.
Director Arun Matheswaran is rumoured to wield the megaphone for Ilaiyaraaja’s biopic. The filmmaker, earlier worked with Dhanush, in the recently released Tamil film Captain Miller. While Dhanush had earlier announced that he would once again work with Arun on another project, it is still not confirmed if the project is indeed the celebratory biopic.
It will be interesting to see how Dhanush will be taking up the role of the maestro, given the actor at various instances has expressed his admiration for Ilaiyaraaja. The actor had also crooned a song for the composer in Viduthalai-Part 1.
Meanwhile, Dhanush is currently working on his second directorial Raayan. Backed by Sun Pictures, the film also stars Kalidas Jayaram, Sundeep Kishan, Selvaraghavan, SJ Suryah, Prakash Raj, Aparna Balamurali, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Dushara Vijayan, among others.
