Every time Raj B Shetty talks about his upcoming film Toby, one thing that he says without fail is that it is a story born out of rage. Although the film is based on a basic thread by TK Dayanand, Raj rewrote it to make it more cinematic and this inspiration, he says stems from the anger that he felt owing to a recent experience in his life What he admits, though, is that if it were not for this sudden spurt of anger, he would have perhaps missed out on making a film like Toby. While Raj has not elaborated on this incident or who is responsible for irritating him enough to spur him into working on another film, there’s been speculation about who and what it could all be about.
And Raj’s most recent interview with standup comedienne Sonu Venugopal for an online channel seems to be the final puzzle in the piece. When Sonu asked Raj about the anger in Toby and what makes him furious, he responded without batting an eyelid that he is most irked when someone else takes credit for something he has written. While that was still ambiguous, he continued adding that he cannot stand the fact that someone has taken credit for something he wrote and even made into a film.

Those who have been following Raj’s career will know that he’s made only four films – Ondu Motteya Kathe, Garuda Gamana Vrishabha Vahana, Swathi Mutthina Male Haniye and Toby. While the first two are done and dusted, Toby will be in theatres in just over a week, while Swathi Mutthina Male Haniye (SMMH), which was shot before Toby is still not out and the recent behind-the-scene video that the production house shared is not on Raj’s timeline. SMMH is a film that Raj wrote, directed and acted in as the first production venture of Kannada actress Ramya . Did Raj just hint at a discord between him and the producer of SMMH? What’s your guess?
