Independence Day takes us back to that moment when India’s legislative sovereignty came into effect. No less than a million freedom fighters rebelled against the British Empire, which led to that historic moment when India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru delivered his famous speech, ‘Tryst with destiny’, which became the first voice of our free nation. Over the years, filmmakers have explored several avenues in creating patriotic movies to celebrate those who sacrificed their lives for the freedom struggle.
Post Independence, films such as Krantiveer (1994), Shaheed (1965), Border (1997), Purab Aur Paschim (1970), among others were well received . However, it wasn’t always easy for our filmmakers to release patriotic films between 1921-1947. Even filmmakers had to fight their own battles against the British to release films.
1942 - A love story(1994) and Kranti (1981) explored the genre well, but films such as The Legend of Bhagat Singh(2002), Rang De Basanti(2006), and Swadesh(2004) truly brought out the spirit of independence within us. Biopics and films revolving around national heroes helped us gain perspective of their lives. Whereas, sports dramas like Chak De! India(2007) established a new benchmark in patriotic fervour. Also, movies such as Ghazi(2017), Roja(1992), Airlift(2016), Biyallish(1951), Raazi(2018), and Uri: The Surgical Strike(2019) have accurately depicted the crucial role that government intelligence, undercover agents, and the anonymous revolutionists play to convey their devotion for the nation. The Sidharth Malhotra-starrer Shershaah which celebrates Captain Vikram Batra, a Kargil war hero, and the Ajay Devgn-starrer Bhuj (based on the life of IAF Squadron leader Vijay Karnik) are two recent patriotic films that have created quite a stir.
This Independence Day, let us pay tribute to those heroes who selflessly sacrificed every moment of their life for their country. Take this quiz on patriotic movies and find out how much you actually know about them.
