It’s been 20 years since Lagaan hit the big screen. But it feels like yesterday when we were bowled over by a compelling fictional story of a cricket team comprising a motley team of Indian farmers who challenged the British Raj and questioned the atrocious taxes being levied. This film’s overwhelming success toppled Bollywood myths surrounding period dramas and sports films which were both genres that didn’t translate as conventional mass entertainers at the time. This Oscar-nominated film also turned the course for the film’s lead Aamir Khan, who subsequently went on to opt for thought-provoking and impactful films over mainstream riff-raff. In fact, one can also credit Lagaan for elevating Khan to an international star. So it’s hardly surprising that in an interview, Robert Downey Jr actually referred to Khan as the “Tom Hanks of India”.
