Who would, in their wildest dreams, have thought that an anticipated sequel to a movie that was the highest-grossing R-Rated movie of its time and brought an Oscar for its leading man would not only bomb at the box office but also get panned by critics worldwide? Joker: Folie à Deux has turned out to be a nightmare for the comic book movie realm, where there was so much excitement for the movie, but it all turned dark once reviews started flowing in, and the movie was soon announced a flop even before completing half its run at the box office.
The Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga starrer has now found some silver lining as Quentin Tarantino has appreciated the film in his new comments about it and says Todd Phillips is the real Joker who said “f*** you” to Hollywood and comic book nerds.
Quentin Tarantino is the latest filmmaker to talk about the Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga-led Joker: Folie à Deux, and he has come out in full support of Todd Phillips’ DC Elseworlds directorial. The filmmaker says he really, really liked the movie and was expecting to be impressed by the filmmaking. What he felt was going to be an intellectual exercise was actually a film he came out liking. Folie à Deux is a sequel to Joker (2019) and tells the story of what happens to Arthur after the events of the first film. Read on to know everything you should about the same.
On the latest episode of The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast, Quentin Tarantino shared his thoughts about Joker: Folie à Deux. The filmmaker said he is just nihilistic enough to enjoy a movie that doesn’t quite work as a movie. He explained how he didn’t find it to be an intellectual exercise but was instead caught up in it, and he even liked the musical sequence, which is the most criticized part of the film.
He thought the songs being banal actually helped the following. He even went on to say he found the film funny and saw it in an empty IMAX theater, giving him room to laugh freely. He called Joaquin Phoenix’s performance one of the best he has seen in his life. Furthermore, Quentin said that Todd Phillips is the real Joker and gave a detailed explanation of why he feels so.
“The Joker directed the movie. The entire concept, even him spending the studio’s money — he’s spending it like the Joker would spend it, all right?” Tarantino said. “And then his big surprise gift — haha! — the jack-in-the-box, when he offers you his hand for a handshake and you get a buzzer with 10,000 volts shooting you — is the comic book geeks.”
“He’s saying f*** you to all of them. He’s saying f*** you to the movie audience. He’s saying f*** you to Hollywood. He’s saying f*** you to anybody who owns any stock at DC and Warner Brothers. And Todd Phillips is the Joker. Un film de Joker, all right, is what it is. He is the Joker,” Quentin Tarantino added.
