Prabhas’ upcoming sci-fi thriller with director Nag Ashwin, which was tentatively referred to as Project K all along, finally has an official title. The makers have confirmed that the film is titled Kalki 2989 AD and as it suggests, the tale is set in the future. Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, Deepika Padukone, Disha Patani, Pasupathy play other key roles in the film.
While launching the first glimpse as part of the team’s appearance at Comic Con San Diego, the makers tweeted, “Project K is now #Kalki2898AD. Here’s a small glimpse into our world.” C Aswani Dutt is bankrolling the film under Vyjayanthi Movies. The film will release in theatres in 2024 across multiple languages - English, Telugu, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam and Tamil, to name a few.
The glimpse opens with visuals of several people experiencing tyranny and hopelessness, a child struggles to drink water while an elderly man appears dead. A series of robots act as soldiers under a ruler as a weapon is directed at Pasupathy, who’s hopelessly holding a youngster. Deepika Padukone looks confused and lost and later Prabhas is introduced as a beacon of hope.
There are kingdoms, robots, machines, people fighting for their identity and Prabhas is here to save them. The glimpse ends with a line ‘What is Project K?’ after which the title text appears - Kalki 2898 AD. The hero holds a weapon and rises as a warrior. By all means, this looks a stellar effort made on a large canvas with terrific aesthetics and production design.
Santhosh Narayanan’s background score provides the necessary emotional foundation for the glimpse and Djordje Stojiljkovic’s cinematography is a delight to watch. This is definitely a relief for Prabhas fans, who were disappointed with the first look and their faith in Nag Ashwin has truly paid off.
